Working Abroad and Placement Fee Reminders for OFWs

The notion that working abroad is a costly process is so outdated. If your desire to be an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) is being hindered by the fear of high placement fees, then you should read the following reminders from the POEA:

There are overseas job positions where collection of placement fees is prohibited. These professions include domestic or household workers, caregivers and seafarers.

Hans Leo Cacdac, POEA chief also said payment of placement fees is not required for OFWs bound for the United States (using H2B visa), Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, and the Netherlands.

Who needs to pay placement fees? Other professions and countries not specified above but with the condition that it will only be equivalent to the worker’s one month's salary abroad. It should only be paid upon so signing of an employment contract. Aspiring OFWs are reminded to apply to licensed recruitment agencies and to demand official receipt as proof of payment.

Ex-OFWs Encouraged to Work as Teachers in the PH

Former overseas Filipino workers who are Education degree holders are given the opportunity to go back to teaching via the new project dubbed, “Sa ‘Pinas, Ikaw ang Ma’am/Sir”  of Department of Education (DepEd) and  Department of Labor and Employment (DoLE).

MalacaƱang praised this government program that would open more than three-hundred (3000) additional teaching positions in public schools.

In a radio interview to Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. in Radyo ng Bayan, he said,  ”We congratulate Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz and Education Secretary Brother Armin Luistro for launching and pushing this kind of program.”

Coloma further informed that DOLE requested from DepEd to open more teaching posts as more teachers are needed in the public schools.

He said, ”According to DepEd, there will be at least 39,000 vacant positions for Teacher 1 for this school year 2015.”
